Fans stand to cheer as Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Felix Hernandez throws against the Cleveland Indians in the third inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, in Seattle. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)It’s mid-September and for the second time in three seasons the Seattle Mariners are right in the thick of the American League Wild Card race. Whether or not this time will end on a happier note remains to be seen. But things line up quite well for the club this weekend, and not so well for the handful of teams in the way.

While the Mariners are toiling with the Houston Astros, another contender, the rest of the clubs in the way of Seattle have a tough go of it.

As you can see, the Blue Jays don’t exactly have it tough in Anaheim versus the Halos, but they do use one of their top two starting pitchers Sunday in Marcus Stroman, which means he will miss the Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday series in Seattle. But for each of the rest of the Wild Card contenders, the three-day weekend matchups are not in their favor on the mound, which is more indicative then home-road or the opponent as a whole.

Here’s how the Mariners-Astros series stacks up over the weekend:

Team Starting Pitcher
Houston Astros Colin McHugh
Seattle Mariners Felix Hernandez
Houston Astros Mike Fiers
Seattle Mariners James Paxton
Houston Astros Doug Fister
Seattle Mariners Ariel Miranda
