Spring Training is almost upon us and sometimes it’s difficult to keep track of what and who reports when, and what date is this and that, so to make it a little easier by putting this all in one place. And yes, I know ‘spring’ doesn’t technically begin until three weeks into March, so save your season jokes for Pat Sajak, eh?

1 – Mandatory Report Date
All 40-man roster players for all clubs must report by this date in order to avoid fines, unless prior permission has been granted. Most often any reporting issues are linked to visas to and from Latin American countries.

2 – First M’s Cactus League Game
16 – Last day to place a player on unconditional release waivers and pay 30 days termination pay rather than 45 days termination pay
This includes all players without guaranteed contracts, most notably players that qualified for arbitration after last season and agreed to terms or went to hearing to settle the dispute. Thirty days of termination pay means about 1/6 salary, since the season typically is 183 days — essentially the equivalent of six months — and players are paid during the regular season. A player set to earn $1 million would receive $166,667 termination pay if the club requested waivers by this date.

30 – Last day to to request 45-day termination pay; requires placing player on unconditional release waivers, just as with the 30-day termination pay cutoff date
A player set to earn $1 million would receive about $245,900 of termination pay if unconditional release waivers were requested by the club after March 16, but before this date.

Note: Players on arbitration contracts indeed can be put on termination pay. These deals do not become guaranteed until after this date. Any multi-year solutions agreed to avoiding arbitration do not qualify for termination pay status. These deals immediately become guaranteed.
