|No. 23 — Dan Altavilla, RHP
|Acquired: Fifth Round, 2014 Draft — Mercyhurst College
Another potential non-first round gem for Tom McNamara, Altavilla offers little projection at age 23 and standing 5-foot-11, 200-plus pounds, but he does offer a shot at a back-end starter or sixth-inning relief option. His fastball sits 90-93 mph and touching as high as 97 on rare occasions. The slider has become a legit swing-and-miss option and the changeup, while still a bit firm, showed more often in the fringe-average range than the year before.
In a relief role, perhaps Altavilla can live at 93-97, squash the changeup and focus on the slider to wipe out batters in quick fashion. It remains to be seen, however, if such an uptick in velocity will appear and remain, but for the time being the right-hander is a rotation candidate for the future, even if just of the back-end variety.
