|No. 16 — Tony Zych, RHP
|Acquired: Trade from Chicago Cubs, April, 2015
Zych’s slight adjustment to his arm slot has added a tick back to his fastball, helped him throw more strikes and added some depth to his low-80s slider.
In college at Louisville, Zych was nearly sidearm, sitting 93-97 mph as a potential future closer. After some time in the minors, the velocity dipped some, as did the bite on his slider. Moving his arm slot north a few degrees has given him back all of his college velocity and perhaps improved his slider by a half grade.
During his September call-up in 2015 with the Mariners, Zych sat 94-97 with tons of movement and a 60-grade slider good enough for swings and misses. If that’s what Zych is going to be, he’s a setup man right now and possibly this club’s closer sooner or later. I saw him several times in Triple-A where he was more 92-94, however, so we’ll see how this develops.
