McKay’s line looks good but he threw just 18 of 32 pitches for strikes (56%). That’s going to have to improve before I project success in the majors for him, but he’ll get there.

2019: 44 IP, 48 H, 18 ER, 13 BB, 37 SO, 3.68 ERA

ANALYSIS:  Potential Free Agent Targets For The Mariners

Sanchez threw 94 pitches, 60 for strikes and may have been around the plate a little too much, especially with the fastball.

No. 13 Ljay Newsome, RHS
THU: 6 IP, 3 H, BB, 9 SO
2019: 9 GS, 51.2 IP, 41 H, 13 ER, 7 BB, 72 SO, 2.26 ERA

Newsome was brilliant, tossing 81 pitches, 55 for strikes, displaying plus fastball command, per a scout in attendance. And that wasn’t all.

“I saw a solid-average curveball and changeup, he touched 93 and pitched most of the game 90-92,” the scout said. “He has some bulldog mentality to the way he pitches. Some Jeremy Hellickson there. Mike Leake. Kyle Hendricks. Dan Haren. Guys like that.”

Of Newsome’s 55 strikes, 10 were put in play — three of them hits, four flyouts and a ground ball double-play. Of the remaining 45 strikes, 16 were foul balls, 15 were called strikes and 14 were of the swing-and-moss variety.

I asked the scout if Newsome was getting the swings and misses off one particular pitch: “It was a mix, including a few fastballs. He may have been cutting the fastball some (he was). The curveball got a few down and out of the zone and some called strikes through the back door. The changeup was probably the best pitch tonight, though.”

Newsome’s changeup is indeed his best pitch and is getting 60 or better grades from most scouts I ask. The video I’ve seen more than backs it up, too.

ANALYSIS:  Best Players The Mariners Got From Other Teams

Newsome is ready for Double-A and is a legitimate prospect. He’s completelt remade himself the past few years.

Like

Like I said to a scout buddy the other day: Player Development is a hell of a (legal) drug. And Newsome’s been on it for some time now.

No. 18 Jake Haberer, RHR
THU: DNP
2019: 11 G, 16 IP, 7 H, 7 BB, 26 SO, 2.81 ERA

No. 19 Joey Gerber, RHP

Bautista will throw again Friday in his first back-to-back of his rehab stint. He threw 24 pitches, 15 for strike sin this one. Friday may be the right-hander’s last appearance with Modesto.

2019: .313/.404/.550, 13-2B, 3B, 6 HR, 18 RBI, 19 BB, 36 SO, 6 SB

THU: 5 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO
2019: 24.2 IP, 33 H, 17 ER, 5 BB, 20 SO, 6.85 ERA

Casetta-Stubbs again struggled with command, catching a lot of the plate, particularly with the fastball, and leaving a lot of pitches above the knees.

In raw form, the stuff still is quality and the right-hander showed off a pretty good curveball at times Thursday, to complement the fastball and slider.
