RANKINGS: Latest Top 40 Prospects Update | MLB: UPDATED 2020 Draft Order

Here’s how the Mariners’ farm system performed Friday:

Tacoma Rainiers (AAA)– Pacific Coast League

No. 1 Justus Sheffield, LHS
FRI: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 5 ER, 5 BB, 5 SO
2019: 54.1 IP, 52 H, 27 ER, 40 BB, 46 SO, 5.74 ERA

Hot and cold for Sheffield, and far too much cold. At this point, I wonder if Sheffield doesn’t get skipped in the rotation once or twice if they’re working on some mechanical adjustments, because he’s just not finding a consistent release point. The stuff is fine. He’s missing bats. The changeup isn’t being used a lot but he’s not getting into a lot of changeup counts, either.

DSL Mariners (R)

FRI: 2-4, 3B
2019: .375/.385/.625, 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBI, BB, 5 SO, 2 SB

Marte has a hit in all six games so far in 2019 and while hitting streaks in and of themselves aren’t a sign of much, there is something to be said for consistently putting forth good plate appearances, and hitting streaks can often be a sign of that.

Marte will not be 18 until October, so like with Julio Rodriguez last year, Marte is on pace to hit the states for full-season ball in 2020.
