Spring Training Preview: Game 12

Make sure to check out Marc Hulet's excellent Rookie Watch piece from earlier.

The unstoppable force that is the Seattle Mariners had yesterday off. Baseball was furious with them for the way their lineup has hammered the rest of the Cactus League, so they were sat in a corner and told to think about what they've done. You've got 10 exhibition wins in a row? Really, guys? Share the love, would you?

After their sabbatical, the M's return to action in Peoria as they host the 4-6 Milwaukee Brewers. Blake Beavan and an interesting lineup will tackle the Brew Crew as they go for a their 11th consecutive spring victory.

Game time is set for 12:05 pm PT. The radio broadcast will be on a delay again. So you can listen in on 710 ESPN Seattle tonight at 7:05 pm, or listen live this afternoon with Gameday on the web or open the At Bat app on your mobile device.

Even though Dustin Ackley is in the lineup today, he'll bat second behind the hot-hitting Franklin Gutierrez. Many have often thought Ackley is better suited for the two-hole in a perfect world, but this Mariners lineup has not been perfect. Of course, Ackley has had his struggles, but I don't know that Gutierrez would be my first pick to leadoff if I moved on from Ackley.

We're starting to get to the point in spring where Eric Wedge may want to play with some things and we can get an idea of what his thoughts are. However, don't look too much into this one. It could literally mean anything. Or, it could mean nothing. We're only left to speculate and see if a pattern forms.

Mariners Lineup
8-R Franklin Gutierrez
4-L Dustin Ackley
9-R Michael Morse
3-S Kendrys Morales
7-R Jason Bay
0-L Raul Ibaņez
2-R Jesus Montero
5-R Vinnie Catricala
6-R Brendan Ryan

Pitching matchup
Blake Beavan will scale the mound for his third spring start. The first one caused a couple eyebrows to raise. Even though it was an extremely small sample, when you see a change in delivery lead to good results, you're intrigued to see more. Beavan's second start didn't fare so well, so we'll see what adjustments he's made for round three.

He'll be up against Milwaukee's Mike Fiers, a 26-year-old righty who made 22 starts with a 135/36 K/BB ratio a season ago. Fiers isn't a big guy at all, but he gets the job done with his high-80's fastball using deception, command and movement.

After Beavan goes today, we're scheduled to see Erasmo Ramirez, Josh Kinney, Charlie Furbush, Kameron Loe, Danny Farquhar, Jhonny Nunez, Logan Bawcom and Carson Smith.

Tuesday's pitchers
That Felix Hernandez kid will play some baseball tomorrow, which is pretty cool. Does it even matter who pitches after him? Sure it does. Following the King will be Hisashi Iwakuma, Tom Wilhelmsen, Lucas Luetge, Carter Capps, Stephen Pryor, Andrew Carraway and Bobby LaFromboise.

There's some serious heat coming from the pitcher's mound tomorrow in Arizona.

Well I hope the Brewers are happy having ruined a perfectly good winning streak. Guess they will have to start on a new one today.
