JAC, I agree that we won't be in on Sanchez, but I like the idea of filling the one "empty" rotation spot from the top down so as to push Iwakuma/Vargas/Ramirez. into their true places as #3-#5 (in no particular order). Is it at all Possible that one of Jack Z's trades this winter is for another starting pitcher?
I know the offense is the primary concern right now, but in theory run prevention is just as good as run production right? I would be curious if Boston has any inclination to continue their roster demolition by moving Jon Lester. Would they listen, and if so, what would it take to get him and could the M's consider it?
If you can get a bounce back year from him it would really improve this teams chance to be the Oakland of 2013. If there is any way he could be had for pieces below the Franklin/Paxton range I would be thrilled to see it happen, but I think that might be quite the pipe dream.

Sanchez is over priced and somebody will pay it, we don't need to. The two best free agent arms available at a decent price and contract length are Joe Blanton and Scott Feldman. They would both do well in Safeco and they still have something left in the tank. Both pitched in bandbox parks and their ERAs suffered but their other numbers are good.
Feldman ERA 5.09 FIP 3.81 xFIP 3.87 fWAR 2.3
Blanton ERA 4.71 FIP 3.91 xFIP 3.39 fWAR 2.4

There's no doubt we need a number two starter type to support Felix at the top. I like Sanchez. Better would be a guy we can get on a short-term deal to fill the gap until one of the young arms is ready to step up in 2014. I like the idea of Francisco Liriano or another guy with upside who will be trying to strike it rich after a big season. Liriano has been frustrating the past couple years.

Why not sign Francisco Liriano to a one year deal while we wait for the big 3 to develop instead? He would be a lot cheaper, and pitching in Safeco is an easy sell so he can improve his value next year...
