2. By: Jason A. Churchill on 06-06-2010 23:39:13 email me hawk... with info including which site you subscribe thru -- paypal, amazon, and the type of sub... forever, annual, monthly. We'll figure it out.
3. By: Edman on 06-07-2010 00:31:32 Without a first-round pick, I wonder if Seattle may be more willing to go after signability pick in rounds 2-5? They aren't going to have the financial burdens they would with a first round pick. In past years, we've seen them more willing to spend Internationally, when they haven't had top draft positions. We'll know soon enough.
4. By: Jason A. Churchill on 06-07-2010 01:52:22 Edman, Not sure what you mean. Going after signability? Without a first? You mean maybe being willing to pay more for an over slot guy at 43 because theres no first rounder?
5. By: Edman on 06-07-2010 02:37:15 Yep, that's exactly what I mean. If a guy drops out of the first round because teams are afraid of his demands (look for Scott Boras clients), would Seattle be willing to take a shot and pay over slot. According to McNamara, they think they'll get a guy who they feel strongly will be a major leaguer with the 43rd pick. I don't think they'll reach with that pick. But, perhaps they'd take a shot with another pick. Of course, they're going to say that about everyone they draft.
6. By: John_S on 06-07-2010 08:15:45 Jason, Do you like the fact that they got rid of the draft and follow process? I thought it was an interesting process and a nice way to get a chance to see a guy who was drafted in the later rounds develop both physically and baseball-wise. When do you think baseball is going to allow teams to trade draft picks? With the NFL and NBA draft, the reason why I watch is to see who the Seahawks and when we had an NBA team the Sonics drafted, but also the trades that occur.
7. By: rocketdawg31 on 06-07-2010 11:30:45 Ahhhh, can't wait. I know the Mariners aren't even first-day participants, but I love playing gadfly and watching the other orgs make their moves. It'll be nice to end speculations on who's going where, as much as I love a well-thought-out mock draft. I'm reasonably certain that Jack Z and McNamara aren't going to shy away from finances on this draft....I think sheer talent will reign, they're going for best player available whenever they pick.
8. By: Edman on 06-07-2010 11:52:01 I thought the first day coverage was for the first fifty picks, so indeed, they will be day one partcipants, all be it late in the day. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I heard them say it would be first round, and supplemental first rounders today.
9. By: brianc1279 on 06-07-2010 12:01:28 I would like to see them select Kellin Deglan, left handed catcher from British Columbia.
10. By: Jason A. Churchill on 06-07-2010 12:17:55 It is, Ed, 50 picks only tonight.
11. By: rocketdawg31 on 06-07-2010 12:41:33 Hmm. My bad. I thought supplementals were tomorrow. Perfectly all right with me...the wait won't be as long.
12. By: rocketdawg31 on 06-07-2010 12:50:03 Out of curiosity, Jason...you mentioned how you'd be a bit surprised (albeit with your caveat to Stormton that "it could be anyone") if the M's went prep hurler at #43. What prompted that? Prep right-handers are likely the strength of this draft, and we as an org could certainly use teenage arms with high-ceilings....even if we need quality, blue-chip bats even more so. Is this because your current information is all pointing to the Mariners taking bats, and there's no definitive buzz with them on any one prep arm? Forgive the uninformed, but I'm all kinds of curious....
