Draft Weekly: Lefties and a Mock

By Jason A. ChurchillBy 03-09-2011

While Anthony Rendon's bat is on fire, he's still not playing third base, which will become a concern should such a scenario linger into April. But other than that, not a lot has changed among the top prospects in the country, college or prep.

For the buzz, a mock top 10 and new Northwest Top 10 and talk about who the No. 1 pick should be, subscribers can click here to jump to the weekly draft report.

Is Rendon's shoulder injury a big concern or are they just being careful and taking it easy with him. I would love to have him. Anyway it goes we should get a solid player.

It's just precautionary at this point. He played an inning or two at first over the weekend.

Jason, two questions for you:

1. Jungman is looking super good, esp. the k/bb ratio. What kind of upside does this kid have? He's mentioned as a borderline top ten talent, but he's never mentioned with the Cole's and Gray's of the world.

2. Are you concerned about Springer's inauspicious start?

Rudolf,

1. Jungmann's pure stuff is top 10-15 for sure, no doubt. His curveball has improved and is now above average at times. He still throws a slider, too. His changeup has also been much better this season. But his delivery is the main question. He's had a violent head jerk in the past, and while that has been abbreviated to an extent, it's not completely gone yet. And he throws across his body.

But even based on raw stuff, he doesn't have what Cole and Gray have, though he might be right under Barnes.

2. Concerned, yes, because the scouts I know that have seen him, including Keith, whom I trust as much as anyone, are concerned, too. The backside collapse is a major issue, but it is fixable. He still brings an awful lot of skill and physical tools to the table.

How far could Springer fall if he doesn't get it together?

I was very excited to see the updated mock draft. That would be awesome if it happened.

Jason, if you take away all of the college players for a moment, then which HS player, Starling or Lindor, has a better upside? What do you think the chances are that Starling ends up playing QB at Nebraska?

Jason,

Looking at the top draft picks is exciting in knowing that we will walk away with one, and I'm having visions of a Felix, Pineda, Paxton, and Cole rotation in 2013 already, but I'm very curious as to who you think will still be on the board when our second pick rolls around.

Wow, what a run-on sentence!

baseballman,

It depends. If the draft were today, not too far, maybe into the 8-15 range. But if he doesn't right the ship to some extent, he could fall deep into the first round. It seems impossible for him fall out of the first round without a major injury being part of the equation, though I suppose it's possible with this class.

acqb1424,

I think, for me, the prep kids go like this:

1. Bubba Starling
1. Francisco Lindor (it really is that close, and Lindor had another unreal game Wednesday)
3. Blake Swihart
4. Archie Bradley
4. Taylor Guerrier
4. Dylan Bundy
7. Nick Delmonico
8. Josh Bell
9. Daniel Norris
10. Austin Hedges
11. Tyler Beede
12. Travis Harrison

That is based on talent. Bonus demands and commitments to college will impact the exact draft order.

In the end, I do think Starling chooses baseball.

Lonnie,

Second round? Tough to say, since there are so many sandwich picks, but a player such as Kent State's Chafin could be there ... maybe a prep kid such as Taylor Goeddel, Joe Ross or maybe A & M's John Stilson. In other words, a pretty good player that would have threatened the first round in the past two classes.
