Draft Blog: Early season pay off

By Chris CrawfordBy 03-03-2010

We all have heard some sort of version of the phrase "they mean just as much in April as they do in September". The MLB season is a constant grind though, with plenty of chances to make up for the slow starts of spring with red hot summers and falls.

With the shortness of the prep season, though -- getting off to a hot start can be the difference between off the radar and on the front page. The better the start, the more relevant you become -- so while you can't put all your faith in small samples, there is definitely something tangible to getting off on the right foot.

One of the players getting off to a hot start who could interest the M's is West Virginia's Jedd Gyorko. Gyorko's skills with the bat would warrant a high first round selection, but the lack of concrete position may have Gyorko slip. Currently hitting a sizzling .370/.485/.741, and if that keeps up Gyorko will be long gone. But assuming a bit of regression, and some concern about where he'll play, Gyorko is a name to keep an eye on all spring.
