Did Edgar fix Mariners offense?

I’m not a native of Seattle and I only moved to Washington in early 2009. So, the most vivid highs and lows in the history of the Seattle Mariners aren’t embedded into my psyche like they are for so many Pacific Northwesters. The team’s trade of Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez’s departure via free agency, and the infamous late inning melt downs of Bobby Ayala don’t make my blood boil just like the Mariners’ historic 116-win season isn’t the first thing that I recall about the 2001 baseball season. Perhaps,…

Reeling It In: Thoughts on M’s before Series

We’ll discuss the hire of skipper Scott Servais and his staff more later this week, starting on the Sandmeyer and Churchill podcast this week, but it’s so easy to get frazzled with all the things on the checklist of the Seattle Mariners and new general manager Jerry Dipoto. Let’s not lose sight of the basic goal — to get noticeable better as soon as possible. One thing to keep in mind: It’s highly unlikely the Mariners, on paper, will have the look of a 95-win club heading into the season….

Churchill: M’s skipper search, front office, AFL

It’s been nearly a month since the Seattle Mariners named Jerry Dipoto the club’s new executive V.P. and general manager. Since then, numerous decisions have been made, including parting ways with Lloyd McClendon. Dipoto has chosen to retain assistant GM Jeff Kingston, pro scouting director Tom Allison and amateur scouting director Tom McNamara. Also not returning are special assistants Ted Simmons, Duane Schaffer, Pete Vukovich, Joe Nigro and Joe McIlvane. Over the past few weeks the rumor mill has spit out a few names in the managerial search. Alex Cora…

Mariners 2015 Prospects of the Year

It’s usually not difficult to identify the players of the year in minor leagues of a big-league organization. Determining the prospects of the year isn’t necessarily as elementary. In fact, it never is in my experience. The difference? Player of the year typically is all about performance. Prospect of the year is significantly more intricate and sophisticated, and requires a lot deeper and widespread investigating. The Seattle Mariners have what many call a weak farm system. I don’t entirely disagree, since a large portion of the club’s talent spent 2015…

Thoughts after meeting Jerry Dipoto

Prior to last night’s game between the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners, new Mariners Executive V.P. and GM Jerry Dipoto spent about 30 minutes talking to a standing room only crowd of season ticket holders at Safeco Field. His opening remarks closely resembled what he’s been saying publicly since his introduction to fans and media on September 29. During a question and answer session, Seattle’s new GM was very candid when answering questions from fans; even the pointed ones. As I reflected on what I heard from the 47-year-old…
