Satisfactory deadline for Mariners

The Seattle Mariners were busy prior to Friday’s trade deadline, consummating three deals and essentially ‘selling’ rather than renting for 2015 or buying for 2016 and beyond. General manager Jack Zduriencik did about as well as one could expect when the pieces moved had marginal and/or short-term value, despite the apparent fact that he was not allowed to discuss trading Hisashi Iwakuma, the club’s most valuable trade chip that is not under contract beyond this season. For such efforts, Zduriencik gets a passing grade, but the organization gets a big…

Churchill: Marte’s promotion

The Seattle Mariners appear to have recalled Ketel Marte from Triple-A Tacoma, most likely to play some second base while Robinson Cano recovers from an abdominal strain. Chris Taylor was sent back to Tacoma to clear roster space. Marte sat out Thursday’s game in El Paso after originally being in the lineup, Prospect Insider learned just prior to the game. There are no other logical choices to replace Taylor on the roster, however, but no confirmation from the team has been received. Marte had played three straight games in center…

The magic of the trade deadline

Winter moves often are far more meaningful than ones made mid-season. Trades made in July sometimes provides only marginal upgrades to a club’s roster, and even when said upgrade is rather large, a slump by the acquired player can and often has rendered the moves somewhat useless. So why is there more excitement leading up to the deadline? Because Major League Baseball’s July 31 trade deadline is magic. Trading for a new player, especially those with a name in the game, is exciting in and of itself. Doing so in…

Mariners part ways with Ackley

What seemed inevitable in recent months has come to fruition: Dustin Ackley has been traded. The New York Yankees are betting prospects Ramon Flores and Jose Ramirez that the former No. 2 overall draft pick is just a couple fixes away from being a consistent major league hitter again. Ackley, 27, has been more or less a fixture in the Mariners lineup since summer 2011 when he burst onto the scene. Drafted as a can’t-miss hitting prospect, the left-hander immediately left a mark with a .273/.348/.417 slash line and 117…

Forecasting the Mariners needs

With the trade deadline only days away and the Seattle Mariners currently on the outside looking in, much space has been put towards dissecting what exactly the team should do this week. Should the M’s be sellers? Could they be buyers? Sitting 9.5 games back in the division and 6.5 games back of a wild card berth entering Tuesday’s games likely suggest the former more so than the latter. Whatever the case, getting a head start on filling holes for next season should be more important than attempting an incremental upgrade for…

Deadline approach differential

The Oakland Athletics have traded left-hander Scott Kazmir, setup man Tyler clippard and utility master Ben Zobrist to contending clubs in the last five days. All three players are headed for free agency. The Cleveland Indians moved platoon outfielder David Murphy Tuesday. The Rays dealt outfielder David DeJesus Tuesday, too. The Boston Red Sox traded Shane Victorino Monday. The hottest of rumors have the San Diego Padres very involved in talks for several of their players, pending free agents as well as others. The Detroit Tigers are considering selling ace…

Most asked about Mariners

With the trade deadline approaching — 1 PM PT Friday — so many conversations, ideas, negotiations and offers will occur that our collective heads will spin. One piece of interesting data is the set of names being discussed the most. For the Seattle Mariners, this means two different sets of names. Those being discussed that could net the club help in the immediate (2015, 2016) and those that may be shipped out in order for the M’s to get something for their pending free agents (Austin Jackson, Hisashi Iwakuma, et…
