M’s get some value from Erasmo Ramirez

Erasmo Ramirez was not going to pitch for the Seattle Mariners this year. At least, barring something catastrophic he wasn’t. With his last minor league option being used during the 2014 season, Ramirez would have to be exposed to waivers if the Mariners wanted to send him to the minors, and he certainly wouldn’t have cleared. So Seattle did the most logical thing: picked-up the value that was available. Mike Montgomery, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Ramirez was a first-round draft pick of the Kansas City…

Prospect Rankings: No. 5 — Gabby Guerrero

The Seattle Mariners’ farm system has taken a hit the last couple of years with the graduations of the likes of Mike Zunino, James Paxton, Taijuan Walker, Brad Miller and Chris Taylor, among others. Still, the organization boasts a solid collection of talent, despite the lack of pitching in the high minors. The club has taken advantage of the strengths in the draft classes the past three years, adding right-handed hitting outfielders with power and more depth in the middle-infield. Seattle also has done fairly well internationally, even with the…

Prediction: Mariners will need more than five starters in 2015

With starting pitcher Roenis Elias being optioned to Class-AAA Tacoma today, Taijuan Walker appears to have a clear path to the fifth spot in the Mariners’ starting rotation. Considering that the 22-year-old Walker hasn’t surrendered a run and looked spectacular in 18 Cactus League innings, today’s announcement wasn’t a great surprise to most observers. Some Mariners fans, however, would prefer that Elias join Walker in the rotation with veteran J.A. Happ being bumped to the bullpen. That scenario isn’t likely since manage Lloyd McClendon is on record stating that the…

Cubs infield picture bright

Fans who attended today’s Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago Cubs Spring Training game in Mesa, Arizona may were probably disappointed if they were looking forward to an “October-esque” pitching match-up between the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez and the Cubs’ Jon Lester. The 31-year-old Lester, who was originally scheduled to start today, was scratched due to a “tired arm.” On top of that, Hernandez struggled with his command and surrendered one walk, six runs, and six hits in two and two-third innings. But, it’s only Spring Training and, based on his track record,…

The legitimacy of a Kris Bryant demotion

Spring Training is one of the few places where the old school beats the new school; emphasis is placed more on how players feel and look instead of their stat line. One player who has captured the attention of both worlds is Chicago Cubs top prospect Kris Bryant. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2013 amateur draft has been turning heads with the pure power display he’s put on in Mesa, Arizona. There is more probability than likelihood, however, that Bryant will begin the season in Triple-A instead of with the…
