For a batting average anyway.
The trade deadline came and went with one solid trade in the bag and two others left hanging. At some point the M’s were close to moving Raul Ibanez east to Toronto before backing out just before the point of no return. While no one outside the negotiations was quite sure which two unnamed major leaguers were offered, it was apparently more prudent to management to go for the extra first round selection during the offseason … assuming they don’t confuse Ibanez with Jose Guillen.
While that “no-deal” is palatable (Ibanez is a fan favorite afterall, and one of the only productive ones), keeping Washburn isn’t. The issue? Some combination of demand.
The Yankees offered to take Jarrod Washburn and pay the whole of his salary for the rest of this year and next in exchange for what was deemed ”organizational filler.” Understandably, the M’s balked, wanting a top prospect in helping their efforts to rebuild. However, in exchange for one of those (Zach McAllister I presume), the Yanks demanded a portion of Washburn’s salary thrown in. The M’s predictably balked at this as well.
You have to question a move like that. Certainly saving at least some majority of Washburn’s salary should’ve been worth it to grab another premium arm close to the bigs. Instead, the M’s said no, got nothing and will pay Washburn’s salary anyway.
It’s true an agreement can still be had past the waiver deadline since Wash is a prime candidate to clear waivers (thanks to his salary), but I have to wonder if the Yanks might be less inclined to accomodate the M’s needs without competition from other teams.
I’ll leave it to you guys to assign the grade. The results look pretty mixed.

If the Seattle Mariners are serious about trading third baseman Adrian Beltre, they must ensure that they are receiving a minimum of one prospect with impact talent, plus the risk of another young talent or two.
Imagine supporting a team where four years of mediocrity means that the fans fire the general manager. Imagine supporting a team where the voice of fans is invited to sit on the team’s advisory board? Imagine supporting a team that has such a resonance with the community that it has sold over 16,000 season tickets with less advertising than a concert at the Showbox?
