Has anyone noticed that Junior's bat really isn't a game-changer anymore? Or is it just me?

I understand the fascination with Griffey, but let's not let nostalgia get in the way of the fact that he's not a great bat anymore.

Go get a cheaper, younger, healthier, faster, and better defender Corey Patterson (outproducing Griffey at the plate in 2008 as well) before Junior.

This being the Farm report thread:

1. TUI! Looks like his bat is coming around so that is always a good sign. Are you liking his defense?

2. Is there something about West Tennessee's home ballpark that is making Luis Valbuena look like like Adam Moore from High Desert? It seems Adam doesn't hit at home.

3. Antoher 9 K's from Juan Ramirez in 7 innings, WOOT!

Paul, I think you’re inference is incorrect. Dave saying that Griffey doesn’t have any value left as an outfielder is not at all the same as saying that Griffey is Ibanez. He are seriously underestimating how bad he thinks Ibanez is defensively if you think those two are on the same level.

Yeah -- I retracted my statement that Dave thinks Raul=Griffey defensively. What I meant was that Dave (and a plethora of other folks) see Griffey as a DH only -- a detriment in the field, if you will -- not that the two are on the same level defensively. But, really, since their stance that they both suck in the OF is pretty clear (to the point that neither of them shouldn't be playing in the OF at all), it's merely picking nits as to who's worse out there (since they both shouldn't be out there, in their minds, at all). Clearly Raul might, defensively, cost a team more runs than Griffey would, but the opinion's clear that Griffey's only usefulness to the team might be as a DH.

It's THAT sentiment that I disagree with. Yeah, Griffey is probably not much of an asset with the glove (if at all), but he's not a detriment. His value, certainly, is mostly wrapped up in his bat right now (and, hence, a move to DH is in order). But it's also pretty clear that Griffey probably wouldn't accept a job as a full-time DH right now. Since he's got 10-5 trade veto rights, you can bet that he'd discuss his role on his new team before he agrees to OK the trade.

If agreeing to let him play RF regularly is the only holdup on Griffey's side, then I'm fine with conceding that -- given, of course, that the M's would be making this move to win in the here-and-now, and not necessarily willing to allow a young, unproven prospect to take over while they think they're in a pennant race. But I know clearly that Dave and Jeff and a plethora of others would not be happy at all letting Griffey man RF.

It's not my ideal scenario, no, but it does hugely take into account the way this management runs the team (and the fact that they very clearly ignore the importance of outfield defense, and ignore how much a younger guy like Balentien could help them).

Oh, and I can't believe McLaren had Lopez bunt the other night when he was 4-4 and Ichiro on first. Let the guy with the hot bat swing it, and let Ichiro steal the base for crying out loud. Terrible managing in my opinion.

Is it bad that at this point, when Wilkerson is say, 0-3, I'd rather he strike out in his last at bat rather than get a hit? I mean, he was a "hero" last night with a nubber RBI. He fouls off every meat pitch he sees. I just wish that Morse was healthy when Wilkerson went down last week for those few games. What would be our options outside the organization to replace Wilkerson? Jason, at what point do we cut him loose?

Damn Jason I dont believe Management, wants the M's to win this year, I mean they stick with the same players in the linep that are having a rough rough year, I mean Wilkerson, I mean wow I can hit better then him lol, and Vidro sure he has had some big hits this year, but wow our offense is struggling badly there has to be a change.

Even in the win-now scenario they have built for themselves, they should have spent the cash on someone that could have come in and done Morrow's relief job for a year.

It's a total waste.

Trust me, I want Morrow to be a starter just as much as the next guy, but with this "win now" mentality, they just refuse to let him start in the minors because he has value in the bullpen right now. It sucks, but hopefully he is able to make the transition when we finally decide to make him a starter.

#128, our rotation is not set for next year. Batista will be 38 at the beginning of next year, and Washburn will turn 35 during the 09 campaign. Both are basically league avg now, and haven't shown any reasons to think either one wouldn't continue to decline in performance. Morrow has the chance to be quite good, and a significant upgrade over either one of them next year, but he needs time in the minors now.

As far as him being "lights out" so far this year, he's pitched 3.2 innings. Thats a pretty small sample size. And you know what, he has a 2.45 ERA, Corcoran had a 1.67. Tha's pretty lights out as well.

So instead of keeping a guy who has been extremely effective out of the pen, and sending down the guy whose real value is as a starter, they do the opposite and waste two talents.

Jon,

I have not and will not read that post on Clement's bat speed, so I can't comment on it.

Re: Morrow

You don't misuse an arm like Morrow's because you have five starters under contract through next year.

That's idiotic.

I still think Morrow can be a starter. He's already shown more pitches this year, and he was throwing 5+ innings a game during the summer. A lot of starters started in the bullpen. Curt Schilling who is sorta similer to Morrow was in the bullpen for three or four years before he became a starter. I think the question is not can Morrow become a starter, but rather do the M's want him to be a starter.

It's kind of pointless to have Morrow starting in Tacoma now since our rotation is set for next year. I think he should start some in Triple-A next year (maybe be called up for spot starts with injuries) and do what he did this offseason so he can join the rotation in 2010 if ever.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Morrow won't be a starter.
I would have definately sent him dowh instead.

Clement now has 19 walks in 21 games and only 11 Ks!! I am amazed by his plate discipline. Jason, how long can Bavasi keep Clement in the minors while Vidro is an out waiting to happen every time he comes to the plate, if he wants to win in his "window" of opportunity?

^I agree that he should be starting in the minors, but from a performance standpoint he's been pretty dominant.

Jason, Wlad wasn't in the lineup again today. What are you hearing about that? Also, does Brian LaHair typically get playing time in the outfield, or is this a new thing?
