Actually, Bavasi should be fired because he doesn't know how to put together a winning team. It took him $110+ million in payroll in 2007 - $294m over three years - and mistake after mistake after mistake over three full seasons to get to the 85-87 wins they'll end up at this season.

And ya know what? I predicted 87 wins. So as long as yer not talking to me about 10 wins above expectations...

So, Cashman should be fired because he'll have a nearly $200 million payroll with a second place finish?

Standings are a BAD tool to measure by. Want proof? Bavasi's team jumped from last to second....is that not a vast improvement...in standings? It's about wins and losses....not where you finish. You have no control over teams ahead of or behind you.

Name all the GREAT FA signings globally. There aren't many. The FA market is a big risk. But, until the farm system is producing, there is little choice. You have to take risks, either that or over-promote kids who aren't ready.

We say the farm system is restocked? Well, unless you have a crystal ball, that's all that can be expected. Nobody knows who's gonna stay healthy, who's going to produce, or who will fail. All you can do is put yourself in a position to succeed. The rest is fate.

Yeah, it is a tough business. And, IMO, Bavasi deserves at least one more year to see if he can finish this thing off. He is paid to succeed, and he did. All the great internet minds may not agree, but on paper, he did. Is just as easy to assume he's right and you're wrong....as it is to assume you're right and he's wrong. The very fabric of the organization will not fall apart if he stays....or leaves.

I think he has been given a fair chance and a very good payrole allways 90 million and all the way up to 114 million and we have a second place finish for it.Players are paid for reults so why isnt the GM?The free agent signings he has had very few good ones and alot of very bad ones .Trades havent been good either. We say the farm system is restocked it may look that way now but until we get Major leaguers out of these prospects then they are only prospects.Like i said before none of these guys have even came close to the numbers Nagoette had in A ball and look what happened to him.Its good to dream on players but until they prove there worth in the majors it meens nothing in the grand sceem of things. There will be guys that get hurt and guys who fail all orgs go thru this so god bless them all and i hope all goes well for them but the facts are its a tough buisness and the strong survive.

Bavasi sucks, and should be replaced? You mean, like McLaren should have replaced Hargrove, because he was obviously better? So, ANY other GM would be better? Haven't we learned a recent lesson?

Things aren't as obvious as some people think they are. Personally, I don't care who the GM is, as long as he has one basic principle that I believe in.....build from within. So far, Bavasi has shown that willingness and is in the process of rebuilding a vastly depleted farm system.

I don't mind opinions, we all have them. But just how did Bavasi fail? Wouldn't you admit they'll be at least ten games above some of the more conservative estimates for wins this season? He made a couple of bad trades, but he also made a couple good ones. He got a productive RF a little risk. Weaver was a risk, but a good one in that it was only for one year.

Here's what isn't happening. Chuck and Howie aren't going anywhere. If you have little faith in them now, why would you want them to pick the next GM? So far, Bavasi has managed to keep them away from the team, for the most part.

What you want is a do-over....and it ain't happening. This ownership group doesn't seem to have any real interest in leaving. And, even if they did, it's a HUGE assumption that the next owner is going to be anymore giving than this one. Be careful of what you wish for.

Let's say they do go for a new manager, would they be looking for a "proven" candidate like Hargrove or an "up-and-comer" like Melvin? I'm guessing it would be the former, probably a guy like Phil Garner.

What sucks even worse than that, cujo, is that Bill is coming back, but on yet another 1-year deal. So, he remains desperate to save his job.

Even though he's been extended already, it would do the M's very well to eat the 225k they are paying him for 2008 and go in another direction.

They cannot go into the winter with Bavasi at the helm and McLaren due to come back.

And if they agree to replace McLaren, do ya really want Bavasi making the choice? Of course not, they wouldn't let him choose his own guy when they hired Grover... why would they now?

I'll have a more full and detailed write-up, albeit not as in-depth as you might be used to here at PI, in the next month or so.

When all the signings are done I'll gather as much info as I can and toss it into a post.

But no, no pitching to brag of.

Also, I was wondering, was Felix very highly rated before we signed him or did people not know he was quite the talent he turned out to be? I know he exploded on the scene as soon as they got him over here, but did we have any idea?

This topic has been run dry. In an attempt to change course, I would like to ask you Jason, what do you know about the international signings we made so far this year. Are they on par with some of the ones from last year (discounting Truinfel of course).
