The Mariners are 8-7 against the Rangers this season but have given up 68 runs in those 15 games, including 18 long balls. Seattle was swept in a four-game series in Texas July 23-25, including a double header on the middle day.
Game four has Jarrod Washburn taking the mound against Vicente Padilla. Washburn is almost always horrible in Texas, so the M’s will have to get to Padilla to have a chance in this one.
But Padilla is 1-5 with a 7.07 ERA in his career versus Seattle and is 0-2 this season, allowing 11 earned runs in nine innings.
The Los Angeles Angels play four with the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend, holding a two-game lead entering play Thursday.
Toronto leads the season series 4-2.
Game 4: Kelvim Escobar vs. Dustin McGowan
The New York Yankees continue a four-gamer in Detroit against the Tigers.
NYY leads the seasons series 4-2.
Game 3: Phil Hughes vs. Jair jurjjens
Game 4: Mike Mussina, in what could be his last start in a Yankees uniform, vs. Justin Verlander.

I’m going to the game on the 29th against the Angels. It’ll be nice to experience a legitimate playoff atmosphere for the first time in years.
Argh. Why do they have to keep running Ho out there?
Because they don’t want to take on the 40+-year old Jose Contreras and his 20 mil guaranteed over the next two years, don’t have any internal answers - yet- and refuse to go with a four-man rotation, which right now would be an insane idea anyways.
On that note, Jorge Campillo is going to get called up, probably after one, maybe two more starts, depending on many factors.
He’s posted a 3.15 ERA this year and is thowing pretty well. He’s not a long-term answer, but he has a chance to do better than what Ramirez has been doing.
Jason, what about Robert Rohrbaugh, He’s been throwing well in Tacoma, do you think he will be an upgrade over HoRam?
The definition of insanity:
Doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result.
Is the FO insane? I would rather have ANY AAA or AA pitcher start in place of HoRam. It can’t be worse. Seriously, anybody - Campillo, Rohrbaugh, Fierabend, anyone…
We know the FO is never gonna let Morrow start this year (the optimum solution to the HoRam mess) so just give us any OTHER warm body. Hell, i’m available!!!
Why no Contreras? He looked pretty good the other night, the price would be low, and the they have to replace weaver at the end of the year anyways. It’s a better idea than letting Bavasi trade JJ Putz to somebody for Joe Kennedy because we need another starter.
Rohrbaugh might get a look, depending on what else they do soak up the available 40-man spots… same goes for Jorge.
Starting Morrow NOW is insane, busch… you’d be asking for surgery.
Contreras sucks, too, dawg, that’s why. AND he’s making 10+ mil per for TWO more years.
Just because you can say that he’d just be replacing Weaver’s bad contract at the end of the year doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.
One way or the other, the Mariners will have an in-house answer for the 4th or 5th spot in 2007. Morrow, Feierabend, Rohrbuagh, someone will get that spot.
So they only need one veteran, and there is no reason to commit 20 million bucks to a guy like Contreras.
How about Baek i know i may be in the minority but i feel like he is better than Rameriz.
If his rehab goes well, he’ll be in the mix, too, right at the top of the list, because he’s already on the 40-man, has ML experience and has tasted success in the bigs.
That makes sense Jason, I guess its frustration on my part watching them throw HoRam out there every 5 days. He is awful. How many starters have made it this far in the year with an ERA over 7 on a playoff team? Not too many, if any.
RE #8:
No one would disagree with you. You couldn’t be in the minority. We have already seen Baek have some success this year. Personally, I think you would have to be smoking marijuana to think that Ramirez is better. Anyone would be better at this point except that you don’t put Morrow in for the sake of his arm.
Didn’t Baek just make a rehab start in Wisconsin?
12 - Scratch that question, looked it up and he did. Didn’t look at the recent game’s box.
How likely is it that the M’s will look to re-sign Weaver if he keeps pitching like he has been since he came off the DL?
Depends on the market for him, yohn.
Nothing Weaver’s done this year should make clubs any less skeptical of handing him a multi-year deal.
The only way we bring him back should be for one year to buy some time.
I wonder if anyone saw Horacio’s start tonight? I for one was unimpressed. He was very close to a disaster.
RE: Baek. I think Mariner fans are open to an anyone but Horacio plan right now. Though after tonights outing Horacio might have an extra supporter or two. I, however, am not one of them.
Horacio seems to get alot of run support like Paul Abbot.
Who’s watching the Yankees and Angels?
What a game.
i am
Im not sure who I want to win. lol
AROD is our friend.
Two-run shot to give the Yankees the lead.
We pick up a game either way, but I guess it’s better to close on the Angels.
Yeah, Yankees are playing too well and we got a better shot at the Angels.
Yep yep, I’ve been watching since I got to work. Come on Vizcaino.
Sad that Vizcaino was their second best reliever until the Hut arrived.
I think the best case scenario is that the Yankees win 2 of 3 while the Mariners sweep the Angels. That would put us 1.5 up on the Yankees in the WC and tied for the AL West lead. I’d rather have the option of beating out two teams rather than have the Yankees get hot and run away with the Wildcard.
We can catch Anaheim later.
Aaaaand he sucks.
Chone Figgins and Reggie Willitz are annoying little nats.
We can catch Anaheim later.
Dude, this race is so close that you can’t WISH for games to be made up later. There is no later when yer two games back on August 20.
Son of a bitch.
What the hell are you doing Torre? Walk him!
Well, we are up a half game on the Yankees right now.
Putting a cushion on our lead in the wildcard isn’t a terrible thing either. Plus (in reality)there is a lot of time for Anaheim or New York (or Seattle) to hit a cold streak and drop 3 or 4 in a row.
Yankees suck chant going on. Think that would ever happen at Safeco?
Actually Etown, we’re up a full game on the Yankees. If they lose we will be up 1.5 games.
ALRIGHT POSADA!
What a game.
Incredible. Down ‘em, Yanks!
Anyone see the highlights of Jeff Cirillo pitching a scoreless inning in the D-Backs 9-0 loss to Milwaukee?
He has better stuff than Ramirez, I swear. See him fan Counsell on that nasty splitty?
Augie Oejada has better stuff than HO too. He pitched against the Marlins when they crushed the D-Backs here about a week or so ago.
It’s funny because just like that series, the D-Backs will probably win the next two games, and yet once again come out of it by being outscored by 5 runs or so.
Joba not available for this game.
Uh oh’s.
Did y’all see ESPN’s breakdown on Ibanez’s adjustments at the plate? I wonder if a healthier shoulder has allowed him to raise his hands a bit.
Arizona is just like the M’s. Based on their RS-RA, Seattle should only be a 4-5 games over .500, too.
I hate that stat. You HAVE to equate for blowouts in either direction, and in a season with so many games, yet so many blowouts, removing the top 10% and the bottom 10% of blowouts, makes for a much more accurate expected win total.
Doing that, the M’s have scored 66 runs more than their opponents, and their expected win total is 67, not 61.
I buy the shoulder thing for Raul, because he’s not getting any pitches now that he wasn’t in May.
I just wanna say, Farnsworth sucks.
Out at home…. sweet.
I’ve watched almost as many D-Back games as Mariner games this year, and there’s two things that have really screwed up their pythag. One is that they almost never lose 1 run games. Their pen isn’t quite as good as the Mariners, but it’s still damn good. And two, they seem to get blown out once every other week. Mostly thanks to their inability to find a decent 5th starter.
Also, fantastic play by Betemit.
Haha Scocia gone!
See yeah you whiny little bitch.
AROD goes yard, Yanks win. Takers?
Goose,
How much of what you just wrote applies to the M’s, too?
Seattle has been blown out(5 runs or more) 19 times, Arizona 18. Both teams have been beaten by 10 or more three times.
Neither team loses many 1-run games and neither team has a good fifth starter.
So, I guess what I’m saying is, we’ll see them for 7 games in October.
is ESPN2 like a minute behind?
it’s 10:14 and Jeter has a 1-1 count but all the gamedays say the inning is over.
ah, gameday mishap. fixed.
On a D-Backs forum I frequent, one of the members thinks it’s destiny that the Mariners and D-Backs face each other in the Fall Classic this year just because of the way both teams have won despite expectations and numbers.
Not sure. Yahoo said mid-ninth for a minute there… perhaps some miscommunication in the computer world.
It would be the second best matchup as a Mariners fan.
The best would be versus the Cubs, of course.
Due to the Lou factor… oh, and because Seattle would win in 5.
Felix vs. Webb 3 times in a 7-game series? Sign me up.
All of the gamedays and gamechannels use the same data people. So if one is off, they all are.
Arod is just 1-for-12 lifetime versus K-Rod, with 7 Ks.
I would try and start Weaver against Webb.
I’m a D-Backs fan as well, so it would be the perfect solution for me.
Abreusucks.com
What happened to your famed batting eye there Abreu?
He left it at the home run derby.
Really? Weaver vs Webb in game 1, Felix vs Davis in game 2? Interesting.
Come on Mo, settle down.
That was almost DOOM. C’mon, Rivera!
This year, I like the idea of Felix having a clear advantage in the pitching matchup.
But Webb may not be pitching game 1, it depends on how the LDS and LCS go.
If the Yankees lose this game, I blame Jeter for not hitting a homer in his last AB versus K-ROD.
Fans doing the Angels in the outfield wave? Die in a fire douchebags.
Nice job Mo.
On to Extras we go!
It’s as if the M’s season rides on this game… I hate finger nails.
lol, goose!
Uh oh’s
Who in the blue hell is Ryan Budde?
damn, saw that coming
Goddamn Yankees and their shitting bullpen.
BECAUSE no one knows who Budde is, he was destined to parachute one in there.
Budde was batting .091. Of fucking course he ends it.
Budde is a 28-year-old AAAA player who for unknown reasons was called up and just had likely the only highlight of his big league career.
First career RBI.
But, Sean Henn? Really?
Well I for one am pleased with tonights outcome.
Really it was a no lose situation for the M’s as we dodged a bullet named Horacio Ramirez.
I still believe the Mariners best chance is to catch the Angels, especially since, if they don’t, it probably means the Halos took 4 or more of the 7 games left between the two teams, also hindering the Wildcard efforts.
I’m a Yankees fan until after the series is over.
Could someone do a freak’n favor for the mariners, and beat the f’n angels for god sake!!!!!!!!!
The M’s just need to keep winning, if they do that by the end of this series they will either leading the division, or in command of the wildcard. I would however like to see the M’s make up the two game gap with the Angels.
What sucks is that LAA isn’t that good.
That Yankee bullpen is why they won’t take the wildcard this year. They’ve been very lucky during their hot streak. But, teams with bad bullpens seldom make it to the playoffs.
All STL had last year was Isringhausen and then Wainwright when Izzy went down.
A solid closer and a bunch of journeymen/rookies.
I think STARTING pitching is what will tell the tale.
Whichever four rotations out of Det, Cle, LAA, NYY and SEA are the best during the last 40 games will live to pitch in October.
I may be in the minority, but I personally would rather see the Yanks get swept out of LAA.
In the first place, I loathe the Yankees.
But more importantly, we are three games up on them in the loss colum. If we (and the Angels) can push that number to five after Wednesday, we’ll still be only 1 game back of LAA in the loss column. If we can get through the Texas series ok, it’s back home for the most important series of the year, and a shot to take first place in the West.
So let’s root for an Angels sweep, our own sweep in Minnesota, and away we go…
But if you root for that and get that, Adam, you HAVE TO BEAT THE HALOS to have a chance at the division, OR hope that NYY doesn’t go 11-2 versus the DRAYs and Orioles to wind down the season.
I’d rather just catch the Angels while we aren’t playing them so the M’s don’t HAVE to take 5 of 7 from them to have a shot.
The Wildcard is going to be awfully tough to hang onto.
And Mussina sucks.
And Mussina sucks… really bad.
Angels 4-1 in the second.
Geeze Petite better beat the Angles tommrow.
Baltimore has harrassed NY all season long.. if they gotta face Bedard and Guthrie another 3-4 times, those are gonna be tough games for NY..
The DRays on the other hand have rolled over for NY.. and it’s likely the Yanks will beat them every single time they play…
Thanks Yankees for sucking hard. Argh.
Man, the Angels sure have had New York’s number the last few years haven’t they?
Jeffrey Clement with a 6 RBI night.. including a grand slam.. Seems to be picking it up a little bit..
Not a fantastic season, but solid.. still hopeful he could reach AS level potential
7-1 Angels…well 2 1/2 games up in the wild card, and 2 games back in the division isn’t a bad thing.
