It’s been a long, long time since the Seattle Mariners had a reason to stick their nose in the air like they own the town and act as if. It seems like it’s been a decade, but it’s been about six years, give or take.
The 2007 Seattle Mariners aren’t too bad after all, following three seasons of mediocrity laced with disappointing transactions and a fan base that’s asked for the heads of everyone in the organization not wearing a uniform on game day.
But the question on Friday July 13 isn’t centered around who to fire, who to hire and who to lay the blame on. The question of the day is “what will it take for the M’s to continue to contend in the American League?”
I don’t know, for sure, but standing pat is not the answer.
That’s not to say that GM Bill Bavasi should offer up Adam Jones and Ryan Feierabend for Matt Morris or Carlos Silva just to get something done, but he’s out looking for starting pitching, and very aggressively according to one National League executive.
“I know we’ve had more than one conversation with Seattle,” he said, noting that he hadn’t spoken to Bavasi personally but that the two sides have had more than one team representative contact each other. “We don’t have anyone we’re trying to trade, especially an arm that might help them but we have needs further down in the organization that we may be able to fill and something could get done if the pieces fit.
“But I also understand from talking to other clubs that they (Seattle) have been pushing the action quite a bit, so if they can make a good deal, it sounds like they will pull the trigger.”
One thing we should remember is the club’s stance on top prospect Adam Jones. Jones’ value to the team is still as high as it was when the idea that Ichiro would be leaving town was still a possibility. Yeah, sure, Jones won’t necessarily be needed in center field for at least a few seasons when Ichiro may lose a step or two and move back to right field at age 36 or so, but Jones still brings the same pluses to the big club; power, speed, plus defense, big time throwing arm and perhaps the most underrated value, his league-minimum salary for the first three seasons of his career.
The M’s can get average or better production out of Jones in left field and get it for far less than such production would cost on the trade market or via free agency. Because of that fact, Bavasi should be, and by all accounts is, unwilling to trade the 21-year-old for anything but a legitimate frontline starting pitcher of reasonable age and contract salary and status.
Basically, this means that unless the Houston Astros call and offer Roy Oswalt, signed for five years and $73 million a year ago, Jones isn’t going anywhere. He’s not going to be dealt to the White Sox for Jon Garland or Jose Contreras, and he isn’t being shipped to San Francisco for Noah Lowry.
There might be a multi-player deal that includes a solid, if not frontline starting pitcher, and a left-handed hitting first baseman where the M’s include Jones, and of course Richie Sexson and some cash, but those deals aren’t often concocted in July.
[Yes, I just said concocted.]
The club’s second-tier trade bait includes catcher Jeff Clement, outfielder Wladimir Balentien, left-hander Ryan Feierabend and outfielder Jeremy Reed, whom a few teams still see a cheap stop-gap in center field for a few seasons.
The Mariners have a decision to make between now and the start of the 2008 seasons when Balentien, who is out of options, has to be among the 25 players taken north for Opening Day, traded elsewhere, or exposed to waivers where he wouldn’t last five minutes.
The conundrum stems from the projected ‘08 lineup including so many righty sticks that adding both Balentien and Jones to it further imbalances the order. The ideal solution is trading Sexson, which is another story for another day, or the Mariners could look to get as much trade value as possible from their second best offensive prospect.
Which leads us to this…
“He obviously doesn’t have the kind of tag that brings back what they (Mariners) want,” said an American League scout of Balentien. “But it’s possible that Jones wouldn’t do that, either, at least not by himself. Either way it would have to be some sort of package thing. They’ll have to give up someone they really don’t want to lose; either Jones or a guy from the 25-man. There really isn’t an easy move to make if you are one of the dozen clubs looking for help in the rotation.”
There has been talk of the Mariners trying to pull off a trade that lands them both a starting pitcher and a hitter, but those I have spoke to say that would be contingent on Sexson being traded first or being included in the trade. The Mariners have yet to indicate that they’d be willing to send any cash in any deal for any player going out, and apparently have not discussed the first baseman with any team since December.
In other words, don’t count on that happening.
But count on the Mariners and GM Bill Bavasi doing everything they can to improve the starting rotation before - and after - the July 31 trade deadline.
Just don’t expect to be dazzled with the results, and pray that Dontrelle Willis doesn’t end up in Seattle.
Mets Have Stud Outfield Prospects
Everyone talks about Lastings Milledge but Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez might have brighter futures than the highly-touted Milledge. Gomez, 21, is on the DL with a broken hand, but was playing well in the big leagues prior to the injury.
Martinez , just 18, is also on the DL in Double-A Binghamton, but is an exciting talent that the Mets think very highly of, and for good reason.
I recently caught up with an NL executive and asked about the two outfielders.
“Even though it’s a cliche, Gomez is similar to Jose Reyes offensively,” he said. “He will chase pitches out of the zone but has improved in that area this season. For now, big-league pitchers can get him out by making his expand the zone, but he’s learning.
“As far as what he can do, though… his ceiling is very high. He projects to be an above-average hitter with average power, but possesses game-changing speed. He could end up hitting .290 with 20 homers and 60 steals. He also has Gold-Glove ability in center field, though he’s likely to slide to right with the presence of (Carlos) Beltran, but his arm is tremendous, a 70, and plays easily in any of the three outfield spots.
“His glove is a little wasted in a corner, like Ichiro’s before he made the move, but with he and Reyes at the top of the lineup, you could see 150 steals between them.
“Fernando is more of a pure hitter with a very quick bat and amazing pop, despite his size. He’s about 6 feet and 190 pounds. At 18 he’s more than holding his own in AA and is displaying the ability to hit .300 with 30 homers. He’s a future 70 hitter with 70 power. Statistically speaking, and tools wise, he really looks like a young Miguel Cabrera. He’s an average to slightly above-average runner, average arm and average glove.
“He’s handling center field now, but he’ll likely move to a corner in the majors, or at worst first base. With Beltran in center and Gomez projecting to right field, Martinez is probably the left fielder of the future. I hear he’s set to stay in AA for the remainder of this season, and it’s not out of the question that he returns there to begin next season as well. But if he turns a corner, he could see NY very, very soon.”
For a team who spends tons of money on stars like Pedro Martinez, Billy Wagner, Beltran and Carlos Delgado, the Mets sure know how to draft and develop. Reyes, David Wright, Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber, Joe Smith, Milledge, Gomez and Martinez are all impact talents that could be the foundation of more than a decade of dominance in the senior circuit for the other team in New York.

We arent desperate but Bavasi might be unless they extend him quickly..By the way i hope they dont even think about it.His trades and free agent signings have been awful even if we are ok this year. The base is set know get him out of here and bring in someone who isnt a joke.Im very happy we are winning this year but we have had the highest payrole in the west for all 3 years bill has been here and ive heard noting but excuses and him blaming gillick for a week farm department. That excuse is poor the whole bullpen,Putz,Sherrill,Oflarety,Green,Rowland -Smith were all acquired before the bumbling one got here.
Not that it changes the premise, cujo, but Sean Green was a Bavasi acquisition.
But it seems those are the only types of moves that have panned out for him in trade. The ones with little impact.
Jason
We’ve discussed in the past that Hargrove had to go first before anything could be done with the roster. When that happened, signing Ichiro was absolutely necessary so Jones could play a corner OF position, be the backup CF’er, or be a huge trading chip. I believe Jones is at his peak value right now sitting in Tacoma for the rest of this month and there isn’t any risk. I totally agree with your analysis of the M’s current status. The drafting of Almonte and Carroll were made with the knowledge that they were going to resign Ichiro for 5 years and they’d need 4-5 years to develop. Maybe we should be looking at this over a two year period instead of one where we’d need another LH bat for the OF also. The Ibanez, Sexson, and Vidro contracts all expire after the 08′ season. The 08′ budget is already committed for $105M which includes Sexson, 5 BP, and 6 RP’s instead of 7. The bench would be Burke, Balentien, Bloomquist, Vidro and either Reed or Ellison. All of this fits right in with what you are telling us. The SP is the #1 priority but I’d still be happy with a LHB 1B by July 31st. At least Bavasi has some good chips to trade with this time so there’s no excuse for getting screwed like in the past. Do you have anymore ideas on this?
Bavasi in the PI:
“My mother always taught me that if the only thing you have to say is, ‘(Expletive) Dave Samson,’ then don’t say anything at all,”
Link
Something tells me we won’t be dealing for Willis….or any other Marlin for that matter for a while.
Jason - what’s your take (and the take of scouts with whom you spoken) about the comparisons between Jones and Wlad?
I think Jones is universally considered the better prospect, due to his ceiling and athleticism, but what about Wlad? His learning curve appears to be as impressive as Jones’. I’m specifically thinking of Wlad’s plate discipline. Also, are we underselling Wlad’s athleticism a bit?
I guess the question is: will Wlad get anywhere near the value Jones would on the trade market? Because, personally, I don’t see as big a gap between the two as others might…
Jason, the Mariners seem rather deep in trading peices at the C. With Clement’s reputation and recent success, with Rob Johnson steadily developing and Adam Moore crushing the Mariners seem to have at least one extra Catcher to include in a deal.
This leads me to a question, what are say the top 10 trading chips that the Mariners have as viewed by other organizations? As opposed to how the Mariners value/needs fit.
Bavasi doesn’t have the best record when it comes to making trades…J. Moyer for 2 minor leaguers who are no where to be found now.
But, he does have pieces to trade that won’t hurt the main club.
J. Clement is more a DH.
J. Reed failed here, but still has people looking at him.
R. Feierabend is expendable
People will also want guys ready and with some sort of MLB experiernce.
H. Ramirez if has a couple decent starts could be traded.
J. Weaver with these starts he has had could be traded, Stl. still is in love with him.
The question what could you get for these pieces?
I hope they keep Balentine and Jones..Next year a OF of Ichiro, Jones and Balentine sounds great with Ibanez at DH. Remeber Guillen is a one year deal and gone guy if I remember right….
One year at5mil then a 9mil team option next year. So not necessarily gone, but with Jones and Balentein in the system , he should be.
Thats also infact another reason I think Jones should already be up. Not just because I think he’s ready and can help the team, but getting a half a year to look at him and see what level he is truly ready to perform at at the mlb level helps your decision on what to do with Wlad next year. Jason made the point earlier that a contending team prob wouldnt want to start two rookie outfielders, if one of them had already played a half a season while not looking overmatched and putting up an ops of say.800, that makes it much more reasonable.
RE: #6
I totally agree…C seems to be where our most tadeable depth exists. At least one of the 4 C (Clement, Johnson, Rivera or Moore) should be offered as part of any deal, no need to cling to all of them as “untouchable”. Plus I think Johjima still has at least ‘08 and probably ‘09 left in him as very productive seasons with the bat. He seems to be getting better with handling the pitchers and his throwing has improved as well.
As for Feierabend, I’m fine with dealing him as well, but if he isn’t dealt, let’s remember he is only 21 and still has a lot of growth. Don’t sour on him because of his ML performance to this point, he obviously should not be in the Big Leagues right now.
Why would Willis be a bad trade if we can get him for suspect/prospects? Willis for OF Reed, catcher Johnson, and SP Jorge Campillo?
Sexon is killing us, by the way. Do you think there’s any chance we can land Mark Teixeira for a package such as: Sexon (the Texas park is built would have him at 40 HR easy); Julio Mateo (good major league numbers and mowing them down in his banishment to AAA), Ryan Fierabend (21 and a good future), and Justin Lehr (AAA All-Star, even if he did get pounded there).
Willis and Teixeira would make a nice statement and provide solid major-league-experienced pros for a stretch run.
Sorry about the spelling above…got a phone call in the middle of things and wasn’t paying attention.
Another by-the-way: I’m not sure why all the Vidro-bashing. Yep, his power and speed are gone, but he’s more patient at the plate than any other hitter we have, and he seems to help sustain rally after rally…something we haven’t had for two or three years. He’s hitting .290-.300, and seems to be in the middle of a lot of our run-scoring. That can’t be all bad. And in the rush to move Jones up, let’s keep in mind that he’s 22, has a high strike-out rate, and won’t immediately hit .300 up here (more likely about .260). Remember Ken Griffey, Jr.? He hit .267 with 16 home runs in his first full year, and that was in the Kingdome. So let’s be a little careful what we are wishing for.
I think trading Sexson is basically the only way to make it work, but that will not be easy. We are going to have to agree to pay a lot of his salary to move him. However, that would not be a bad thing, as bringing up Wlad and Jones would only carry the minimum price tag.
The question is would the club go for two rookies at the corners, with Ibanez at first?
The Willis thing deserves its own post but… in short…
1. He’s not cheap. He’s making 6.45 mil this season in his second arby seasons and is likely to net around 10 mil for 2008 in his final arbitration stab.
2. He’s not any good. His ERA has gone up nearly two runs in two seasons and he’s putting up below average numbers across the board this season in the NL.
How’s that going to translate into the more hitter happy American League? And Willis is already pitching more than half of his games in pitcher’s parks. Dolphins Stadium is a severe pitcher’s park, and they play upteen games a season in Washington - a severe pitcher’s park - and at Shea Stadium, the NLs version of Safeco Field.
3. If people were talking about trading Wlad, Clement and Feierabend to, say, Cleveland for Cliff Lee, most of you’d have a cow, and rightfully so.
Willis is Lee with better stuff, but worse command and a hefty price tag.
Jason,
how about Wlad, Clement and Feierabend to Baltimore for Erik Bedard? oh let me dream a little bit….ok it will never happen, I know this.
Soooooo, where’s all the Sexson supporters now huh?
Where’s all the people who would get in an absolute uproar whenever anyone suggested trading Sexson for nothing so we could rid of his salary?
Yeah.
As far as the LH lineup thing, it’s been bandied about quite a lot, but here’s a question. When the Ms take the only LH hitters they have (Ichiro, Vidro, Ibanez) and stack them 1-3 at the top of the order, doesn’t that pretty much negate the whole point? Which would you rather have 3 LHs, but hitting 1-3 (and two of them sucking anyways), or 2 LHs spaced out in the lineup?
This team doesn’t need to be blocking potentially good hitting for mediocre LH hitting. Bring in good hitters first, then worry about the handedness.
ya, im not too big on the Willis idea. I really dont think we can get any front-line starting pitcher. the asking price will be way to high and there will be many teams after the same player..
btw Jason, honestly, do you think Denny Almonte will sign with the Mariners?
Doesn’t seem like it, Greg, but many times agents drive a hard bargain for the first three months until they realize that their player isn’t truly worth what they want.
The M’s won’t overpay for him, and they surely should not. I’d just as soon not sign him. I think he sucks.
What is so bad about him?
i would be very happy if he signed.
but then again, i am always a huge fan of speedy players.
Jason, kind of off topic, but did you see the Midseason Top 150 prospects by Matthew Pouliot on rotoworld.com? He had Jones as the third best prospect in all of baseball (behind Justin Upton and Jay Bruce), Carlos Triunfel at No. 28 overall, Clement at 34, Balentien at 39 and Michael Saunders at 149. What are your thoughts on that? It seems to me like the M’s are moving closer to having a respected farm system. Any chance of the M’s buying low on Rich Harden?
He’s a tools guy, Greg, and he doesn’t have the tools of someone like Jones at the same age.
The name Kenny Kelly keeps popping up when I talk about Almonte.
Pouliot is actually a pretty good prospects guy… so I respect his thoughts, even on players that I know I have seen more and have more info on from in and out of the M’s organization.
I’m not sure I’d have Jones quite that high, but I think he’s top 10 for sure.
It’s no the strongest crop of prospects because teams are dipping down into their system so much more these days… Ryan Braun is a total freak-a-zoid, for example, but is no longer a prospect, technically.
I think I’d have Upton No. 1, but after that I’m not sure where I’d go. I like Fernando Martinez an awful lot and though he doesn’t have the athleticism of Jones, his bat may be better and in the end that’s where it’s at.
I think he has Buchholz too high, as I see his ceiling being as a No. 2 starter… I might have Maybin ahead of Jones, and I think Pouliot has Daric Barton way too high. He’s Lyle Overbay, not Carlos Delgado.
And I’m not a fan of Brandon Wood. I also think Jacoby Ellsbury is too high. He’s Johnny Damon, not Ichiro.
But all of this is subject to differences in systems. I believe more in higher-risk, higher-reward, MP clearly likes the sure things more than I do.
As far as the M’s system, yeah, it’s getting there. But ya notice what’s missing from their guys in the top 150?
Pitching. They have no pitchers in that group, though Aumont and Tillman both have that kind of ability.
Jason,
Any chance the Rockies would trade helton for sexon straight up because of the money they would save? Helton would make a good #2 or #3 hitter for us and he is LH. He has lost most of his pop but he is hitting 300 on the road and has an insane OBP.
Jason
Don’t you think that not having any pitchers in MP’s top 150 is because of the situation Bavasi was stuck with. Fontaine wasn’t really able to zero in on pitching until the 06′ draft. The team seems to have been constructed so that the final outside pieces go into place by 09′ or through trades in 07′ or 08′. They need one SP now and Morrow could also be some help in 08′. The SP from their own farm system should start to produce something by 10′. They also need to find LH bats for 1B and corner OF position between now and the start of the 09′ season.
marinerdan,
Yeah, but the M’s would be idiotic to take on Helton’s contract.
UncleAl,
No, I don’t. They had a chance to develop a starting pitcher from the ‘06 draft, and internally decided to waste him as a 7th inning reliever in the big leagues.
And I wasn’t clowning Fontaine’s drafting anyways… He’s done well. But that doesn’t change the fact that as an organization the club has no starting pitching.
As far as potential impact starters, it’s Felix and then skips all the way down to A ball. And I’m not talking about aces… just impact No. 1-3 potential type guys. They have ZERO in AA or AAA.
Jason
Should we give up on Morrow ever being a SP? I can’t understand why Morrow must be a RP. They have Bibens-Dirkx and Mickolio who are close and Huber, Lowe, and Kahn coming off the DL in the future. Your point is well taken about the organization and SP but that applies to every thing they’ve done up to now. There are almost no position players in A+ or AA either as of the beginning of this year. They are going to have to get a SP, LH 1B, and LH OF in FA or in a trade before they get anything more out of their farm system in the future. This ignores Jones, Balentien, and Clement of course.
Jason
Does the fact that Wlad hits way better against RHP (.344) then LHP (.272) Help his shot at making the 25 man roster next year. If this is how he traditionally hits then you could almost think about him as another lefty bat couldn’t you.
Like anyone on the Mariners pays attention to splits
Jason,
Saw the following in an article in the Trib web page:
“The long-limbed right-hander didn’t disappoint. After issuing a walk to load the bases, Mickolio did what comes naturally – throwing straight side-armed heat – striking out Dan Ortmeier and Justin Leone, then getting William Bergolla to pop out to left to end the threat.”
Does he really throw 95 MPH with a side arm delivery?
Also do you know what the coaches in Tacoma think about Brad Thomas? Has he by chance turned a corner or added a new pitch lately? He certainly has had good numbers over the last three games. His walks are still fairly high but he wouldn’t be the first pitcher who managed to be useful while “effectively wild.”
Mickolio throws a 3/4 delivery, it’s not true side-arm action, no.
The staff LOVES Thomas to no end. If he sharpens his command, he could become a relief option. I haven’t seen a new pitch, though. Just better control.
re: Morrow
No, but just hope the Mariners haven’t, either. Like I’ve said many times before, the return of Mark Lowe and to what extent he comes back will play an unbelievably large role in how the M’s can choose to view Morrow’s future starting in 2008.
If they see Lowe back to form and ready to pitch the 7th and/or 8th inning, they don’t NEED Morrow there and can send him to AAA Tacoma for 150+ innings as a starter.
Morrow’s command needs work, but his split and slider don’t need as much work as some seem to think. He’ll get a lot of outs with the exploding four-seamer - enough to be an effective No. 3 starter - making the development of his secondary offerings less critical than most pitchers.
It’ll come, and you want him to sharpen those pitches as much as possible, but instead of it being a must for him to start, it’s more of a must for him if he wants to a frontline guy for the next 10 years.
re: Wlad
I wouldn’t think so, and it shouldn’t… But yeah, Wlad has always done better versus RHP.
In 2005, he hit .299 versus righties and .256 against lefties, though he was equal last season.
This season he’s equal in OBP, but the average is significantly better versus RHP and his slugging is nearly 50 points better.
But things could change drastically in the big leagues, since the better pitchers are in the show because, for one, they are a lot smarter, have better stuff and know how to attack weaknesses.
Not to mention that the PCL, as well as most other leagues in the minors right now, is enduring a down year in the area of quality pitching.
Wlad’s presence, even with a severe reverse split, doesn’t change the way the opposing team’s manager would set up his bullpen. If Wlad came up late in a close game, Jim Leyland isn’t going to remove right-hander Fernando Rodney and replace him with left-hander Bobby Seay… but if Wlad was a lefty bat he would. And that’s what offenses should be designed to do — avoid allowing the opposing team to roll through the lineup without removing relief arms and replacing them with those of the opposite hand.
The top teams in the Al have good bullpens, and an effective way to get around facing the dominant guys for too long is to have a balanced lineup. Make the dominant righties face lefty bats that can do some damage. If Leyland removes Rodney to go to Seay against Ben Broussard, great. The Tigers are now without their second-best short reliever, simply because Ben’s success versus RHP and lack of success versus lefties got Leyland to flinch. Happens to good managers and sometimes it’s the right move. Which is another reason why sliding Vidro to the bench is a GOOD idea right now. Not all pens can go O’Flaherty-Morrow-Sherrill-Putz, so in the scenario I painted above, Seay would be facing Vidro, pinch-hitting for Ben, as a right-handed hitter - his stronger side. The matchup is now in the M’s favor. Vidro versus Seay>Rodney versus YuBet, or whoever ben was PH’ing for to begin with.
Just imagine how much more effective those situations can be for a team that has a lefty bat STARTING instead of coming off the bench.
Thanks for the answers Jason. Now for one more.
Are the Mariners over looking some possible starters by branding pitchers relievers too early, not trying hard enough to teach a third pitch, etc.? I am not just talking about Morrow. Is Mickolio, for example a possibile candidate to start? In his recent three inning outing I believe he threw over forty pitches. Given the lack of top starters in our upper minors wouldn’t it be better to try and see if he could learn another pitch and become a starter? Even if he is not a good candidate, are there any other relievers in the system that would be better starting candidates?
Yes, it does seem that they may do that, and too early in a pitchers career. However, I don’thave nearly the issue with it on Mark Lowe, since they had a good reason to make him a reliever. O’Flaherty, too.
Morrow is a different story, but I do think some guys are just much better off in relief, such as Mickolio and Rafael Soriano, who broke down every single time he went extended innings.
I can’t think of one arm that is in relief right now that should be starting, with the exception of Morrow.
jason why did the mariners sign tomo ohka
Jason
Could this Kosuke Fukudome be the answer to our LH bat corner OF’er? He’s a free agent at the end of this year with no posting fee?
Jason, kind of a random trade idea, but what about the Mariners sending Sexson to the Reds for Junior? The money is close and the contracts are both up at the end of 08. Would the Reds think about that or if they move Junior would they not want salary in return? Also, would a package of Wlad, Johnson, Feierbend and another prospect be enough to pry Bedard away from Baltimore?
jason, how much longer is the organization going to let gallagher and paredes throw lights out in NWL? Wasn’t gallagher’s biggest bugaboo at stanford his control? Because right now he’s at 21/4 k/bb over 28 ip.
Jason, any word on some international signings?
Anybody know or heard if Jon Lester is available? Cause I wouldn’t mind the M’s making a deal for him.
Sexson for Junior? I would consider doing that since you pick up a productive left hand bat with power, and a better average. I understand what you are talking about contract wise, but if I were the Red’s I would want another minor leaguer thrown in, and I would want the M’s to eat a large piece of Sexson’s contract. Griffey despite the injury risk is way more productive than Sexson.
Jason,
Nolan gallagher has been dominating in his first 5 starts at Everett. Has his stock risen, in your mind, from what he has shown there? Do you think he has a chance to contribute at the major league level in the future?
Jason, am I reading Paredas’ stats correctly…He pitched in 1 game for 5 innings allowing no hits, 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts for Tacoma this year?
Nolan Gallagher has looked real good…I’ve seen two of his other starts and he seems to know what he is doing out there. Our company seats are in the reserved section right behind home plate, so you get to see the pitcher’s stuff.
I think he’s got pretty good stuff and pitches off his fastball well, though it isn’t going to be a “wow” fastball at higher levels without some improved velocity.
I like him…he has the same first name as my 2-year old.
Agree on Gallagher. I’ve seen him twice too, and he may not have explosive stuff, but he’s got good stuff and knows when to use it.
Command is his only issue, which is true of most all kids at that level. It’s not an issue of walking guy…but he seems to have short lapses where he can’t get ahead of hitters. To his credit, he’s done a good job, so far, of recovering. But, as he gets to higher levels, it may not be as easy to get those outs.
All in all, he appears to have a possible role in the majors, with some refinement.
Parades has had moments of being impressive…..then, loses command. If he can show consistant command, he too has a future.
I find it funny that people here seem to think that Sexson, while worthless in their eyes, would be someone other clubs would want.
Hope Richie gets hot in the second half, because nobody is going to bail the Mariners out of his contract.
Jason any new rumblings on a possible Jones call up tomorrow along with Horacio? With Ichiro having a tender right leg for a couple of days and the fact that 3 of the next four starters the M’s face are lefties it just seems like an okay time to call Jones up.
Jason, what is FireFox?
How is it better than Internet Explorer?
Firefox is a rival browser to IE. One of the major differences is that it is open source. Meaning that people can make mods and you can download them. Plus it uses tabbed browsing which the latest version of IE pretty much completely ripped off from FireFox.
should i bother getting it?
why is prospect insider better on FireFox rather than IE?
Paredes… 15 groundouts to 3 flyouts tonight.. that’s pounding the lower half of the zone..
6 IP, 1 ER, 3Ks
Ah, sorry, obviously if u do the math.. u see he pitched 7 innings, not 6..
Firefox rocks. Keep asking around. My favorite parts of it are all about customization and appearance, so better keep asking others about the rest of it.
why did the mariners jake woods designate for assignment
\
This does a few things, Steven. It opens up a 40-man spot for someone on the 60-day DL or someone not yet added to the 40-man.
Mark Lowe and Kameron Mickolio make sense, though Lowe is a few weeks away still it seems.
Woods isn’t very good, either, so no loss if he’s claimed, and he has a decent chance to skate through waivers, which would allow the M’s to assign him to AAA Tacoma if they wish.
It could also mean the M’s are thinking ahead, but pre-September, when they might want to call up Jeff Clement, Justin Thomas or someone of that nature.
Noticed that Bulter pitched 2 innings today. That is great to see and I hope the M’s are very careful with him the rest of this year. Let him build up arm strength, command and confidence so that 2008 he gets back to near the top of the teams prospect list.
jason are they gonna bring up adam jones
Jason,
In your view does Rivera, James and De La Cruz have a chance to be a part of the M’s bullpen in the next couple of years? What type of prospects are they? Do they have much upside or what we are currently seeing is what we’ll get.
why does one site say he got optioned and the other one says he got designated assignment
wat do these mean TB CS OPS GO/AO
how do u subcribe to the news letter
TB=Total Bases
CS=Caught Stealing
OPS=On base plus slugging
GO/AO=Ground outs to Air outs ratio
Rivera doesn’t, James, probably not and DLC, well, outside chance.
